The Mazilu-Brown Engineering Research Fellowship

This Fellowship was created by Jaime K. Mazilu Brown '05 Th'06 via Saguaro Technology, Inc., a company founded and run by her mother, Doina Mazilu. The goal of the fellowship is to encourage students to pursue graduate studies and academic engineering careers in the United States.

Eligibility

To be eligible, students must be an engineering sciences major in the AB and/or BE program or be a Partner School Dual-Degree program student at Dartmouth/Thayer. Students must work with a faculty advisor at Thayer.

Application

An award of up to $5,000 will support student research projects during the 2026–27 academic year. The selection committee will seek to award the fellowship to three students in 2026–2027. The Fellowship cannot be used for tuition but may be used for supplies, salary ($20 per hour), conference attendance, and other expenses related to the research proposed.

Deadline

To apply, students should submit an application form by Friday, November 27. Awards will be announced by mid-December.

Submission Form

Apply by completing an application form, which includes the following components:

  • Applicant contact information
  • Research proposal (maximum of two pages that outlines the research goals and methods as well as a short statement describing both the Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts of the project)
  • Budget that outlines how the $5,000 will be used to support the project
  • Statement of future plans (a statement of the applicant’s future plans and how the proposed project supports those plans)
  • Applicant’s resume
  • Research advisor name and contact information (the committee will reach out to faculty advisors to ask for confirmation that they are willing to work with the applicant).

Selection Criteria

Applications will be reviewed by a committee using a process that is similar to that used for the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program. Applications will be evaluated based on Intellectual Merit (the potential to advance knowledge) and Broader Impacts (the potential to benefit society) as well as the applicant’s ability to complete the project and their future plans.

Project Reporting

Students will submit a final report to their Thayer faculty mentor and to the department chair (Professor Vicki May). A final culminating presentation is also required at the end of spring term, whereby the student will present their research highlighting the goals of the research, results, and implications for future research. The Mazilu-Brown family will make every effort to attend this presentation.
