MEng: Medical Physics Track

Medical physics is the application of physics and related sciences to the practice of medicine. Most medical physicists work to ensure the accuracy, safety, and quality of medical procedures involving the use of radiation, such as medical imaging and radiation therapy. Dartmouth's Master of Engineering in Medical Physics (MEng: MedPhys) prepares students for a career involving healthcare technology, particularly the identification and implementation of improvements in radiation-producing technology for both diagnosis and treatment.

This concentration meets the didactic course requirements of the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP) and is currently under review for accreditation (as of August 2026). Once this program is accredited, graduates will be eligible to take the American Board of Radiology professional board exams, enter into CAMPEP-accredited residency programs, and pursue careers in therapeutic or diagnostic medical physics in the clinical environment. In addition to the MEng in medical physics, students will need to complete ethics training via ENGG-700 or equivalent. Note that CAMPEP-accredited degrees will not be available until the program has been accredited.

Course Requirements

The program consists of nine courses, of which seven should be from the list of core courses. The remaining two electives can consist of any graduate-level engineering or science courses at Dartmouth.

One of the nine courses must include a term project or product that is sufficient for assessment of the MEng Learning Outcomes. This may be fulfilled by either a core or elective course within the student’s total of nine courses. There are several courses which meet this requirement.

As an on-campus MEng student, you will work with your faculty advisor to develop your program plan to fulfill the MEng requirements, which is approved by the MEng director and submitted to the graduate academic advising director during your first term enrolled in the degree program.
