Typical Thayer PhD Process

PhD students typically spend their first year or two in the program completing coursework and working towards PhD candidacy, while also delving into research. Their remaining time in the program is dedicated to their thesis research, and most students complete the program within five years.

PhD Timeline & Tasks by Year

All PhD forms are available on ThayerExpress under "PhD / PhD-I / PhD+MD" and can be submitted to the Thayer Registrar in MacLean 103.

FIRST YEAR

WEEK 1

Enroll in ENGG 700.
Enroll in ENGG 195. Your grade will remain ON (ongoing) until you complete 28 Jones Seminars.

Submit proposed 1st Year Course Schedule (on DartHub) to the Registrar.

BEFORE THE SECOND TERM

Form a special advisory committee with your advisor and discuss your PhD Program Plan.

Submit approved PhD Program Plan (on DartHub) to the Registrar.

Submit Course Equivalence Form with approvals to the Registrar (if transferring courses).

DURING YOUR FIRST YEAR

Participate in ENGG 198: Research-In-Progress Workshop each year.

JUNE OF FIRST YEAR

Complete Annual PhD Student Advisory Meeting Report and meet with advisor. Submit the completed form to the Registrar.

SECOND YEAR

BY FALL OF SECOND YEAR

Enroll in ENGG 194: PhD Oral Qualifier.

Submit Oral Qualifying Planning Sheet. Refer to the Oral Exam Guide and Oral Qualifying Exam.

ADVANCE TO PHD CANDIDACY

Pass Oral Exam (ENGG 194), maintain a B or better averages in coursework & research, and be recommended by your advisor.

During Your Second Year

Participate in ENGG 198: Research-In-Progress Workshop each year.

JUNE OF SECOND YEAR

Form a thesis committee in consultation with your advisor and email MS/PhD Director for approval.

Complete the Annual PhD Student Advisory Meeting Report and meet with thesis committee. Submit the completed form to the Registrar.

THIRD YEAR AND BEYOND

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Complete the Annual PhD Student Advisory Meeting Report each year (June).

Complete the Thesis Proposal Form. (See the Thesis Guidelines and Templates folder.)

Complete ENGG 197: PhD Professional Workshops or ENGG 197.10: Professional Development.

Participate in ENGG 198: Research-In-Progress Workshop each year.

Give an oral presentation at a professional conference.

Have at least one manuscript, as first author, accepted for publication.

Complete a dissertation.
