Student Policies

The Thayer Career Services Office is committed to providing equitable access to services, resources, career and internship opportunities for all students. These policies are designed to ensure professionalism, fairness, and accountability in student interactions with employers and Thayer Career Services events, resources and services.

Student Eligibility and Expectations

All currently enrolled students have access to Thayer Career Services resources, programs and
appointments. By engaging in recruiting or networking events, students agree to adhere to the following
expectations.

  1. Professional Conduct

    • Students must demonstrate professionalism during all interactions with employers including but
not limited to emails, event participation, and interviews.
    • Students understand and will follow appropriate dress codes (e.g. business casual or professional)
      as requested for certain events.
  2. Accurate Representation

    • Students acknowledge their responsibility to honestly and accurately represent themselves in
professional documents (resumes, CV’s, cover letters and other application materials), and
profiles (LinkedIn, Handshake and DartmouthConnect). This includes but is not limited to
accurately representing their degree name and completion date, work and project experience
(including accurate titles and roles), and GPA.
    • Falsifying information can result in suspension of services, resources and events provided by
Thayer Career Services or other Dartmouth career offices.
  3. Event Attendance and RSVP/Registration Etiquette

    • If a student RSVPs (registers) for a networking event, information session, on-campus interviews,
career fair 1:1 meeting, group session or other employer or Thayer Career Services event, they are
      expected to attend.
    • If a student is unable to attend, it is requested to cancel your registration at least 48 hours’ in
      advance.
    • Students that are no longer able to attend an employer interview or virtual career fair session
should notify the employer and Thayer Career Services with a minimum of 48 hours.
    • Failure to attend a virtual career fair session, virtual or in-person employer event or interview
without proper notice may result in:
      • A required apology to the employer.
      • A temporary hold on access to recruiting opportunities and Handshake.
      • Possible permanent revocation of services for repeated violations.
  4. Advising Appointments

    • Students acknowledge that if they are unable to attend an advising appointment they will cancel
      in Handshake.
    • Students that no-show three appointments will lose access to all Thayer Career Services resources
and programs. You are required to meet a Thayer Career Services coach to reinstate your services.
  5. Follow-Up Etiquette

    • Students are encouraged to send thank-you notes or emails after networking and recruiting events
or interviews. Avoid over-communication or overly assertive follow-ups.
  6. Use of Recruiting Platforms (e.g. Handshake, Interstride)

    • Only apply to positions students are genuinely interested in.
    • Students must use the platform responsibly and professionally.
    • Abusive behavior (spamming, false applications, etc.) will result in access suspension.
  7. Offer Acceptance and Reneging

    • Once an offer is accepted, students are expected not to continue interviewing or renege (back
out of an already accepted offer).
    • Reneging damages the school’s relationship with employers and may result in loss of services or
      alumni support.
    • Reneging on an accepted offer is a serious breach of professional conduct and may lead to:
      • Loss of access to on-campus recruiting.
      • A report to academic and student affairs or similar offices.
  8. Report Offers and Outcomes

    • Thayer Career Services Office asks students to report job offers, salaries, and acceptances to support data
collection and rankings (this information is kept confidential).

Networking Conduct

  1. Professional Behavior

    • Students must conduct themselves professionally in all settings (virtual and in-person, on and off-campus). This includes maintaining respectful communication, appropriate attire, and punctuality.
  2. Event Registration and Attendance

    • Students should register only if they intend to attend.
    • If unable to attend after registering, please contact Thayer Career Services Office
  3. Follow-Up Communication

    • Students are encouraged to send thank-you notes after employer interactions.
    • Follow-up communications must be respectful and true (not excessive).

Recruiting Policies

  1. Application Integrity
    • All information submitted (résumés, applications, profiles) must be truthful and accurate.
    • Misrepresentation is a serious offense and may result in disciplinary action.

Violations of this policy may result in one or more of the following:

  • Written apology to employer and/or alumni.
  • Temporary or permanent loss of access to:
    • Handshake, Interstride
