Dartmouth Engineering Financial Aid

MEng students—except for online MEng students—are eligible for need-based aid that can cover up to 40% of your tuition. When you fill out your graduate program application, be sure to indicate if you’re at all considering applying for financial aid in order to facilitate the process if you decide for sure at a later date. This indication will not affect the processing of your application or the admissions decision. To apply, make sure to fill out the CSS Profile (Dartmouth CSS Code: 3351) when you submit your application or shortly after but no later than the application deadlines indicating your year in college as "1st-year grad/prof."

MS degree students can be fully funded through research grants and fellowships, which include a stipend, if you are admitted under the guidance of a faculty member, who sponsors and mentors you throughout a multiyear research project in their lab. With faculty member support, there’s no need for you to apply for financial aid. Please reach out to the faculty member(s) you're interested in working with.

As a PhD student, you are fully funded through research grants and fellowships, which include a stipend. You are admitted under the guidance of a faculty member who sponsors and mentors you throughout a multiyear research project in their lab. Therefore, there’s no need for you to apply for financial aid.

If you are admitted into the PhD Innovation Program you can receive up to $10K per year in additional funding for research starting in your third year. This program provides an excellent opportunity to supplement your research with entrepreneurial skills. Please reach out to the faculty member(s) you're interested in working with.

If you’re a current Dartmouth BE student applying to the MEM program, you may be eligible for need-based “BE aid” (for BE-eligible terms) such as a partial-tuition scholarship, hourly employment as a teaching assistant or in other roles, fellowships, and loans. To apply, complete the online CSS Profile Application form (Dartmouth CSS Code: 3351) indicating your year in college as "5th or more undergrad" by April 30.

Additionally, you’re encouraged to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) (Dartmouth federal school code: 002573; US citizens only) to determine your eligibility for grants, work-study programs, and federal student loans.

If you’re planning to complete BE and MEM degree requirements simultaneously, be sure to submit a BE program plan with your MEM application. For the time you are completing the BE requirements (generally 1–3 terms), Thayer will grant whichever aid is higher, BE or MEM.

Mazilu Fellowship

• Eligibility: Engineering sciences majors earning an AB and/or BE or Partner School Dual-Degree Program students. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and have an advisor at Thayer.
• Application Process: Reviewed by a committee including the senior associate dean for academic affairs, the department chair, and the BE program chair.

E.E. Just Undergraduate Fellowship

• Eligibility: Sophomores majoring in a STEM discipline who aim to earn a PhD in a STEM discipline and are committed to the mission of the E.E. Just Community.
• Application Process: Submit application with essay questions and a research proposal. Identify a research mentor. Finalists are selected for interviews.

As a PhD student, you typically enter with full funding support from either a graduate research assistantship (GRA), an external fellowship, or an internal scholarship, fellowship, or grant.

If you're a BE or master’s student, you may have the opportunity to apply for teaching assistant (TA) positions. Before the start of each term, you’ll receive an email with a form to fill out to determine which classes you’re qualified to TA. However, please be aware that TA positions are not guaranteed.

Undergraduate Students

American Nuclear Society Graduate Scholarships

• Eligibility: Graduate students studying nuclear science or nuclear engineering. Detailed eligibility varies, so consult the specific scholarship guidelines.

Eligibility: The fund is primarily available to PhD students with high financial need and scholarship-eligible master's students who may receive one disbursement, generally not more than $600, per academic year for extraordinary circumstances that fall outside of the typical cost of attendance such as emergency travel, medical co-payments or personal needs, or educational needs not covered by financial aid. (BE students should contact the Dartmouth Financial Aid office for this funding.) All requests will be kept confidential.

Eligibility: Short-term, interest-free loans are available for emergency needs of Thayer students.

Eligibility: PhD students upon promotion to candidacy are eligible to request up to $1,000 to attend an engineering conference focused in their field of thesis research. The student does not need to be presenting research results at the conference to be eligible.

How to Apply: Submit a written request to the PhD program director within one year of advancement to candidacy.

Your eligibility is determined through the CSS Profile (Dartmouth CSS Code: 3351). The CSS Profile should be submitted when you submit your graduate program application, or shortly after. Once you submit your information through the CSS Profile, they process your data and send us a Financial Need Analysis Report. This report helps determine your eligibility for need-based aid.

Yes, you must file as a dependent and include parental information unless you:

• Are married
• Have dependents other than a spouse
• Are an orphan or a ward of the state
• Have served or are serving on active military duty (not just for training)

For PhD programs, engineering funding typically covers the full duration of enrollment, usually five years. For other programs, financial aid granted in your first year does not automatically continue into the following years. If you're in the MEng or MEM program and your program spans more than one year, you must reapply annually using the CSS Profile application.
