Overview

The Dartmouth Engineering Summer Research Experience aims to broaden participation in science and engineering by expanding access for non-Dartmouth undergraduates who may not have opportunities at their home institutions. Students are selected based on their eligibility and their research interest alignment with the availability of projects offered during a given summer. All research projects are conducted remotely.

Program Overview

The eight-week program, led by Dartmouth faculty, offers students research-focused experiences with opportunities to:

  • Engage in engineering research in one of Dartmouth's engineering program areas: Biological/ Chemical, Biomedical, Electrical/ Computer, Energy, Materials Science, and Mechanical/ Operations/ Systems Engineering.
  • Access to mentorship and professional development resources for considering different career paths.

Who is eligible to apply?

Non-Dartmouth science and engineering majors enrolled in an undergraduate degree program are eligible to apply, including students who will graduate in 2026.

Students from non-research-oriented institutions, historically underserved students in science and engineering, as well as first-generation college students, are encouraged to apply.

No Cost for Participants

This program does not have any fees or costs associated with participation.

What costs are not covered? 

This program does not provide stipends or other financial support to participants.

How to Apply

Please complete the Dartmouth Engineering Summer Research Application and submit with the required materials by March 1, 2026. Applications will be reviewed as they are submitted.

In the application form, you are required to submit:

  • Unofficial academic transcript
  • Resume
  • Description of previous research experience and how it relates to the program (1–2 paragraphs)
  • Description of how the program can benefit your future academic and professional career (2–3 paragraphs)
  • List of research areas in which you are interested

The application also requires two letters of recommendation. The recommenders should directly email their letter to the program managers at eng.summer.research.experience@groups.dartmouth.edu with "Summer Research Experience" in the subject line. Applicants should not be CC'ed or included in the email. Letters of recommendation are due March 15, 11:59pm ET.
