Yoshihiro Nakayama Receives MEXT Young Scientists' Award

Apr 09, 2025   |   by Catha Mayor

The "Young Scientists' Award" from the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) is given to researchers under the age of 40 who have made outstanding research achievements that show advanced capabilities, such as research from an original perspective.

Assistant Professor of Engineering and Member, Academic Cluster: Changing Polar Regions, Yoshihiro Nakayama

Yoshihiro Nakayama, an assistant professor of engineering at Dartmouth, is one of 100 early career scientists from all disciplines to receive the award this year.

Professor Nakayama earned his PhD in natural science from Universität Bremen, and has held research positions at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Hokkaido University. His current work is advancing our understanding of the rapidly changing polar oceans and cryosphere.

Nakayama's research combines advanced numerical modeling and field observations to study ocean–ice interactions, with a focus on sea ice and ice shelves. His achievements include identifying ocean heat pathways to the Totten Ice Shelf using helicopter-based observations and developing coupled ocean–ice shelf models in the Amundsen Sea to reveal key processes driving Antarctic ice loss.
