MS Program Plan

During your first term as an MS student, you will develop a full program plan to fulfill the MS degree requirements.

Your MS program plan is designed based on your academic background and professional goals with guidance from your advisor.

Resources & Guidance

Helpful information to begin your plan:

  • MS course requirements
  • Course catalog (you can also search by term)
  • Graduate Course Equivalence and Credit form; use this to transfer graduate-level credits. You can transfer up to half of your required courses. Dartmouth BE students can double-count up to six applicable courses.
  • Three-credit check: Most MS students register for three credits per term. To get to three credits, choose the research course option from the list below that matches the number of credits you need:
    • Two lecture credits and ENGG 296: (1 credit) Graduate Research
    • One lecture credit and ENGG 297: (2 credits) Graduate Research
    • No lecture courses, register for ENGG 298: (3 credits) Graduate Research
  • Residency check: You must be in residence for at least three terms after your bachelor's degree.
  • ENGG 700 Responsible & Ethical Conduct of Research is required in your first fall, so it is automatically included in your program plan, but you still need to register for the course.
  • Questions or additional guidance: email Graduate Academic Advising Director Liz Lerret or set up an appointment.

Create Your Plan

  1. Log in to DartHub.
  2. Click on All Tiles and then the Course Program Plan tile.
  3. Select Master of Science Program Plan, which leads to the form pictured below.
  4. Fill in with the correct information.
  5. Click continue to generate a PDF.
  6. Sign your program plan.
  7. Obtain your faculty advisor's approval and signature.
  8. Submit your program plan to the Thayer Registrar (either hard copy or email attachment).

The registrar will review it and send it to the MS/PhD program director. You will be notified when final approval is granted.

If you deviate from your program plan, log in to DartHub to amend your plan, updating the courses that have changed. Generate a new PDF, obtain a new set of signatures, and provide it to the Thayer registrar for final review and approval.

Potential reasons for needing a new program plan:

  • Class schedule changes or conflicts.
  • You change your mind about a course or want to try something else.
  • You receive a second LP grade (you may only count one LP for every six courses).

Review course and thesis requirements.
