"Responsible AI in Practice: A Realist Perspective from Industry"

Abstract

Developing artificial intelligence responsibly requires the ability to trace how AI systems produce knowledge and how that knowledge is used in specific applications. While recent developments in AI have vastly expanded the scope of such systems, they have also greatly increased the challenges organizations face in managing risks and opportunities related to AI. This is the job of responsible AI. Responsible AI, as a discipline, has not been clearly defined, but this talk will trace how the practices of responsible AI, as implemented by a practitioner, have shifted alongside successive developments in machine learning. Finally, this talk will outline new research directions required to address emerging challenges to responsible AI development today.

The Dartmouth Autonomy Seminars explore how common principles of autonomy link fields such as robotics, economics, and cognition, and bring together academia and industry to discuss autonomous systems.
