Overview

Eric Holmgren, DMD, MD, FACS, is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and engineer whose academic interests bridge surgery, biomechanics, regenerative medicine, and global health. He earned his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Vermont, where his work focused on biomechanics. Before pursuing medicine and dentistry, he worked as an engineer at Qualcomm.

Dr. Holmgren subsequently earned his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania and his MD from Oregon Health & Science University, where he also completed residency training in oral and maxillofacial surgery. He is an assistant professor of surgery at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine and practices within the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery/ Maxillofacial Surgery at Dartmouth Health. He collaborates with faculty and students at Thayer on research involving craniomaxillofacial trauma, mandibular biomechanics, engineering and regenerative medicine strategies for craniofacial reconstruction, and the application of engineering principles to clinical problems. He has a particular interest in mentoring students at the intersection of engineering, medicine, and surgery.
