D&I Annual Report 2024–2025

The Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Committee documents Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth's annual progress towards building a more welcoming, inclusive community where students, faculty, and staff feel valued and empowered to thrive. This report reflects our commitment to transparency and accountability and provides an overview of our goals and progress toward key milestones.

For copies of past annual reports, contact Simge Engelkiran.

Year Two Milestones Overview

Throughout 2024–2025, the D&I Committee made progress in four main areas as outlined in the strategic plan:

  1. Leadership and Accountability
  2. Culture, Climate, and Community Engagement
  3. The Student Experience
  4. Recruitment and Retention

Nine working groups focused on advancing and achieving specific objectives within each area (as outlined below). In addition, the Committee continued to collaborate with campus-wide partners on ongoing initiatives that support Thayer students, strengthen community, and bolster health and wellness.

Leadership & Accountability

Goal: Align and hold leaders accountable to a shared vision and commitment towards building a community where all individuals feel supported and empowered to reach their fullest potential.

Year Two: Staff performance reviews and job descriptions

Working Group: Tricia Spellman (chair), Bruce Laferriere, Elisabeth Waltz, Ron Lasky

Objective: Staff performance reviews and job descriptions incorporate clear, action-oriented responsibilities and self-assessments, ensuring accountability and alignment with Thayer's values.

Milestones

  • Dartmouth's Human Resources (HR), in collaboration with Thayer's HR, updated the annual performance review form and process, which will be implemented for future reviews.
  • Additionally, HR is advancing a job architecture project aimed at promoting greater alignment across campus for employees in similar roles.
Fireside Chat on "Factors Influencing Confidence Levels in the Workplace and the Classroom"

Year Two: Fireside Chats

Working Group: Britt Goods (co-chair), Simge Engelkiran (co-chair), Eugene Korsunskiy, Hung V.-T. Nguyen, Jen Seiler

Objective: Leaders at all levels foster community and civility through quarterly Fireside Chats, actively participating and supporting Thayer's D&I mission while promoting transparency, trust, and engagement across the community.

Milestones

  • Organized three fireside chats with Thayer senior leadership that covered the following topics:
    • Thriving in Winter
    • Retaining Sanity in the Age of Digital Overload
    • Factors Influencing Confidence Levels in the Workplace and Classroom

Year Two: Clear and inclusive feedback mechanisms

Working Group: Emily Monroe (chair), Elisabeth Waltz, Lydia Reedstrom, Petra Bonfert-Taylor, Vicki May

Objective: Leaders at all levels establish and communicate clear, inclusive feedback mechanisms, ensuring transparency and engagement while supporting Thayer's D&I goals and fostering a culture of community and civility.

Milestones

  • Completed five listening sessions in December 2024, gathering insights from both staff and research personnel.
  • Based on key takeaways, provided recommendations to Interim Dean Doug Van Citters and Chief Financial and Administrative Officer Tricia Spellman for next steps.

Culture, Climate & Community Engagement

Goal: Cultivate a welcoming and inclusive work and learning culture in which all students, staff, and faculty feel valued as an integral part of the community.

Year Two: Training, coursework, learning app

Working Group: Katie Hixon (co-chair), Simge Engelkiran (co-chair), Helene Seroussi, Kelli Kehoe, Wei Ouyang

Objective: Every community member is empowered and equipped to foster an inclusive environment, contributing to a culture that promotes continuous community building and learning across all levels of Thayer.

Milestones

  • Organized five Learning Series for faculty and staff, delivering lessons through weekly email communications.
  • Facilitated community conversations to provide faculty and staff with the opportunity to share their perspectives and engage in meaningful dialogue.
  • Piloted two Learning Series for students.

For faculty and staff:

A globe with different languages around it.

Year Two: Resources (physical and digital)

Working Group: Haley Tucker (chair), Alex Boys, Linda Braden, Rafe Steinhauer, William Ren

Objective: Ensure all of Thayer's physical and digital resources are inclusive and accessible.

Milestones

  • Initiated exploration of ways to improve signage for graduate students and postdoc offices.
  • Began looking at how to bring menstrual products to all restrooms, in alignment with Dartmouth-wide policies.
  • Started developing an inclusive communications plan focused on sharing events and activities online, setting the stage for continued progress.
  • Implemented onboarding for teaching activities to enhance support for newer faculty, hosting four "Evidence-based Introduction to STEM Teaching" workshops, led by Professor Rafe Steinhauer, during the winter 2025 term. Specifically for newer faculty who started in December 2023 or later, each session provided practical strategies and foundational knowledge for effective teaching at Thayer. Each workshop served about 10 faculty members.
  • Launched "FAQs about Teaching at Thayer" that features short videos with Thayer colleagues addressing common questions, such as Professor Sol Diamond's insights on teaching within a 10-week term. To streamline access to these resources, we also created a dedicated Canvas site that organizes both the workshop materials and the FAQ content in one centralized location.

The Student Experience

Goal: Refine existing or develop new student policies, practices, and programs to ensure every student has access to resources and opportunities to help them feel connected, supported, and to thrive.

Year Two: Mentorship

Working Group: Jess Kinzie (co-chair), Lee Koh (co-chair), Peter Chin, Erin Mayfield, Matthias Fitzpatrick

Objective: Create new or expand successful and sustaining student-to-student and faculty-to-student mentorships.

Milestones

  • Conducted review of existing mentorship programs at Thayer and across Dartmouth and evaluated current initiatives with the goal of combining, enhancing, or sunsetting programs as needed.
  • Developed a mentorship survey to better understand current student experience with mentorship across Dartmouth. Due to the flux in committee membership in 2025 (due to job changes, parental leave, etc.), the survey was not administered in 2024–2025.
  • Plans to integrate mentorship information into fall 2025 orientation to ensure incoming students know the available resources.
  • Proposed a new structure for the Mentorship Working Group for 2025–2026 to include current students to get a more accurate pulse on student mentorship needs.

Year Two: Barriers to student success

Working Group: Colin Meyer (chair), Jentry Campbell, Julia Abraham, Liz Lerret, Wesley Marrero

Milestones

  • Developed and secured funding for a bridge program connecting students from partner institutions with research opportunities at Thayer and across Dartmouth.
  • Established partnerships with the University of Valle (Colombia) and Ana G. Méndez University (Puerto Rico), both of which have committed to funding student participation in undergraduate research opportunities.
  • In Summer 2025, four students participated in an undergraduate research experience at Dartmouth—three students participated remotely and one student attended in person.

Recruitment & Retention

Goal: Refine existing or develop new faculty and staff recruitment and retention processes to ensure every employee has access to resources and opportunities to feel connected and supported, and to thrive.

Year Two: Tenure-line faculty career development

Working Group: Emme Burgin (chair), Ashley Parker, Erin Mayfield, Laura Ray, Sol Diamond, Wesley Marrero

Objective: Evaluate for transparency and inclusion, identify barriers and opportunities for improvement of the faculty tenure and promotion processes as they relate to diversity and inclusion. Include clear guidelines and expectations.
