Scheideler Named a 2023 SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer
Jun 15, 2023 | by Catha Mayor
Dartmouth Engineering professor William Scheideler is one of nine academics named a 2023 Delcie Durham Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer by SME—formerly the Society of Manufacturing Engineers—for his exceptional accomplishments and contributions to the manufacturing industry.
"I am honored to be recognized by the SME as a leading early career researcher in my field alongside a group of very accomplished awardees," says Scheideler. "The award is an acknowledgement of the outstanding research done by my exceptional team of students and postdocs. I'm optimistic that our work on scalable additive manufacturing will accelerate the translation of innovative energy materials and flexible electronics technologies from lab to market. It has been a pleasure to advise and mentor my group and I thank them for all of their hard work that has led to this point."
Scheideler completed his doctorate as an NSF Graduate Research Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, where his thesis explored scalable nanomanufacturing of metal oxide electronics. As a postdoc at Stanford, he studied scalable fabrication and thermomechanical reliability of perovskite solar cells. In 2019, Scheideler joined the engineering faculty at Dartmouth where he launched the Scalable Energy and Nanomaterial Electronics (SENSE) Lab, and just this year earned the Woodhouse Excellence in Teaching Award. His recent advances in fabrication of 2D-metal oxides for electronics and energy applications, high-frequency stretchable sensors, and 3D-printed electrodes have led to numerous papers published in top scientific journals including Advanced Functional Materials and Advanced Materials Technologies.
Established in 1980, the SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer award recognizes engineers, age 35 or younger, who have made lifelong contributions to manufacturing and SME. "This group of young engineers is one of the most educated, accomplished groups we've honored in recent years," said SME executive director and CEO Robert "Bob" Willig. "Watch with me as they gain momentum over their careers, as I'm sure we'll see some remarkable achievements in manufacturing technology, processes and materials come forth."
