Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth has announced the completion of its largest-ever campaign to raise $60 million to enhance the undergraduate and graduate engineering experience at the College. This Partners in Innovation Campaign was part of the overall Campaign for the Dartmouth Experience which launched publicly in November 2004.
This comprehensive campaign was chaired by Overseer Charles Nearburg D'72 Th'73 '74 and included goals for facilities, endowment, and annual giving. The campaign closed on December 31, 2009, achieving a total of $61 million.
"We are grateful to everyone who contributed to the success of this campaign," said Dean Joseph Helble. "The Thayer Board of Overseers led the School with their generosity and vision for the MacLean Engineering Sciences Center. The Thayer Annual Fund Executive Committee worked tirelessly to grow unrestricted annual giving throughout the campaign. My predecessor, Dean Lewis Duncan, led the School through strategic planning and the initial phase of this campaign. William Lotko oversaw the public launch and the building project, and kept momentum going for an interim year."
Construction of the MacLean Engineering Sciences Center (ESC) was completely funded by donors and is the crown jewel of the campaign. In 2004, the School's laboratories and workspaces were overflowing with students, equipment, and projects. Along with studio classrooms, multimedia computing systems, and next-generation research facilities, MacLean ESC features integrated project labs designed to support one of the cornerstones of engineering education at Dartmouth—teaching innovative design skills through hands-on, team-based projects.
The campaign's achievements also include:
- Four endowed professorships that strengthen Thayer School's focus on engineering in medicine and innovation and entrepreneurship;
- Over $5 million for fellowships;
- More than $7.5 million in unrestricted annual gifts through the Thayer School Annual Fund;
- Establishment of the Ph.D. Innovation Program—the nation's first doctoral-level engineering Innovation Program;
- More than $7 million to encourage entrepreneurial projects among students and faculty; international exchange and internship opportunities; and distinguished speaker programs.
Added Dean Helble, "To every volunteer and every donor, thank you for your investment in Thayer School and the technology leaders who, because of their Dartmouth engineering experience, will make an important difference in the world."
