Cybenko Named Dartmouth's First SIAM Fellow
Apr 03, 2020 | by Julie Bonette
George Cybenko, the Dorothy and Walter Gramm Professor of Engineering, has been named a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and will be recognized at a future SIAM meeting. The milestone marks the first time a member of Dartmouth's faculty has achieved the honor.
The 28 distinguished members of the Class of 2020 Fellows were nominated for their exemplary research as well as outstanding service to the community. Cybenko was specifically recognized for contributions to theory and algorithms in signal processing, artificial neural networks, and distributed computing systems.
"I am profoundly honored to be thus recognized by my mathematician peers,” said Cybenko. “There is no question that, as the world gets more networked and data collection grows, novel approaches to quantitative modeling and analysis will become central to society and industry. I am grateful to be part of that enterprise here at Dartmouth."
Cybenko has made key research contributions in signal processing, neural computing, parallel processing, and computational behavioral analysis. He is also a of the Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and holds degrees in mathematics from the University of Toronto (BS) and Princeton (MA and PhD). In 1996, he also received an honorary degree from Dartmouth, where he has taught since 1992.
He was the founding editor-in-chief of Computing in Science and Engineering, a publication produced by the IEEE and the American Institute of Physics (AIP), as well as IEEE Security & Privacy. He is also the co-founder of Flowtraq, Inc., which produced a high-performance network monitoring, security, and forensic tool, and was acquired by Riverbed Technology in 2017.
In his nomination letter, Cybenko’s colleagues wrote that he “is a true applied mathematician in the spirit of SIAM: he is a mathematician but he focusses his research on applications in industry, computer science, engineering, communication and security. … Cybenko deserves to be recognized as a SIAM Fellow for his fundamental research contributions and his impact on our Applied Mathematics community.”
SIAM, headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is an international society of individual, academic, and corporate members from 85 countries. SIAM helps build cooperation between mathematics and the worlds of science and technology to solve real-world problems through publications, conferences, and communities like chapters, sections, and activity groups.
