Results & Recap: Dartmouth's 20th Annual Formula Hybrid+Electric Competition
May 18, 2026 | by Catha Mayor & Rusty Spydell
Formula Hybrid+Electric (FH+E)—founded and run by Dartmouth—welcomed over 500 undergraduate and graduate engineering students from across the US and Canada for the 20th annual competition on April 26–30 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

"This year's competition went really well," said Mike Chapman, Director of FH+E. "The number of registered teams was a respectable twenty-five, although it was disappointing that the team from India wasn't able to make the trip due to visa issues."
The teams competed with the hybrid and electric high-performance race cars they designed and built over the previous ten months. To make it "on-track," vehicles had to pass numerous technical and safety inspections, but even teams that don't see the track gain valuable problem-solving and teamwork skills.
"The teams came very well prepared this year. Almost half of the thirteen teams at Sunday's electrical pre-tech session passed inspection," said Chapman. "Overall, the teams were enthusiastic and energized and the cars were well-designed and constructed."
This year, the awards were expanded so that leading teams of each event received trophies: Design, Project Management, Acceleration, Autocross, and Endurance. "Awarding the challenge coins sponsored by the IEEE History Section in honor of FH+E's 20th year to the 'unsung heroes' of each team was also a hit with the students," added Chapman.
