Materials Science

Materials science is an interdisciplinary field encompassing physics, chemistry and engineering. We study materials because of an intrinsic fascination in structures and their characterization and because microstructure determines the bulk physical properties of a material. There are many applications for materials science, but we focus on three: the microstructure of snow and ice, materials found in objects of cultural heritage (e.g. cellulose, glasses, and ceramics), and materials used in sports equipment (e.g. wood, metals, polymers and composites).
