“Cyclic Loading of Ice”


Many materials subjected to cyclic loading fail at stresses below their strength. A number of instances where ice weakening takes place have been reported earlier. New experiments surprisingly revealed opposite behavior of ice. A significant increase of flexural strengths as a result of cyclic bending of thin plates of freshwater and saline ice was observed under variety loading frequencies, temperatures and stresses amplitudes during cycling.
