Interview Tips

Congratulations—you got the interview! Start preparing early and schedule an appointment via Handshake; we can map out next steps. Think of preparing for interviews as a five-step process:

Know yourself

Preparing for interviews begins with understanding yourself. Take time to reflect on your experiences, strengths, and goals as you craft responses to common questions like

  1. Self-Assess

Take time to reflect on your experiences, strengths, and goals as you prepare responses to common interview questions such as:

    • "Tell me about yourself."
    • "Describe your leadership and communication style."
    • "What is your most significant accomplishment?"

  2. Seek Feedback

Talk to your peers, professors, and family. They can provide valuable perspectives on your attributes, personality traits, and accomplishments, helping you see yourself more clearly and articulate your story effectively.

  3. Get Professional Guidance

Talk to one of us! We can help you frame your experiences and qualities in a way that aligns with the position you’re applying for. For hands-on practice, schedule a Mock Interview to refine your responses, build confidence, and prepare for the real thing.

Know the Employer and How You Can Contribute

By understanding the employer and aligning your skills and experiences with their needs, you’ll be able to clearly articulate how you can contribute to their success.

  • Conduct Research

Before your interview, take time to thoroughly research the company. Familiarize yourself with:

    • Its products and services.
    • Its mission statement and values.
    • How the company was established and where it is headed.

This knowledge will help you tailor your responses and demonstrate your genuine interest in the organization.

Look Your Best!

Looking your best not only boosts your confidence but also leaves a positive and professional impression on your interviewer. Dress for success!

For In-Person Interviews

Whether you’re interviewing at a traditional consulting firm or a start-up, aim for a basic and conservative look. Check out Stetson University’s Dress to Impress page for inspiration!

  • Ensure your outfit is clean, pressed, and tailored to fit you well.
  • Pay attention to the little details:
    • Shine your shoes.
    • Check for loose hems.
    • Tidy your hair and nails.
    • Shave or groom facial hair.
    • Avoid wearing perfume or cologne.

For Virtual Interviews

  • Dress in business casual or professional attire, just as you would for an in-person interview.
  • Even though the interviewer may only see your upper half, wear professional pants or a skirt in case you need to stand up during the call.

Show Up, Be Interested, Ask Questions, and Follow Up!

By showing up prepared, asking thoughtful questions, and following up, you’ll leave a lasting impression and make an informed decision about your future!

  1. Be on Time

Arrive early (or log in early for virtual interviews) to show respect and preparedness.

  2. Engage During the Interview

    • Make eye contact and answer questions thoughtfully.
    • Don’t hesitate to ask for clarification if you’re unsure about a question.

  3. Ask Insightful Questions

Prepare questions that demonstrate your research and genuine interest in the role and company. For example:

    • "What is the usual time frame for making a hiring decision?"
    • "How has this position evolved since it was created?"
    • "What have you enjoyed most about working here, and why did you choose this company?"
    • "Can you describe some current challenges that the selected candidate will encounter?"
  4. These questions not only show your enthusiasm but also help you gauge if the role and company are the right fit for you.

  5. Assess Workplace Culture

Ask questions to understand the company’s culture, such as:

    • "How would you describe the team dynamic here?"
    • "What does success look like in this role?"
    • "How does the company support professional development?"
    • "What values are most important to the organization?"
    • "How does the company celebrate achievements or handle challenges?"

  6. Follow Up Promptly

    • Send a thank-you note within 24 hours of your interview.
    • Express gratitude for the opportunity, reiterate your interest, and highlight key points from the conversation.

Notes:

  • Remember, the interview process is a two-way street. While the employer evaluates you, you should also assess whether the role and company align with your goals and values.
  • If you accept an offer, you’ll likely spend more time with your colleagues than with most people in your life. It’s important to like the work you do and the people you work with.
