Summer Term and Thayer Graduate Research

Dear Thayer Community, 

I am writing to follow up on Dartmouth’s two recent announcements about the continued pause to research and the decision to deliver summer courses remotely.

While this was not the news that we all hoped for, Thayer faculty and staff stand ready to deliver high quality, personal, and interactive remote learning opportunities this summer. Just as we are working hard to do now, our faculty and lab instructors will strive to remain connected to our students and provide meaningful, hands-on, project-based engineering education. As of now, Thayer plans to offer most, if not all, undergraduate (AB/BE) engineering courses currently scheduled for the summer term. Thayer does not offer graduate-level courses in the summer, and therefore graduate education is unaffected in this way. 

For our sophomores, we know how disappointing this decision is and understand that some of you may wish to change your D-Plans so that you can be in Hanover during the summer of 2021. For those who do, we will work with you to ensure that you can still meet the requirements of your major, and if it is in your future, the BE. If you wish to explore changing your D-Plan, please contact Jenna Wheeler (Jenna.D.Wheeler@dartmouth.edu) to start the process of modifying your major.  You will need to communicate with an advisor in Engineering to work through course sequencing.  If you don’t have an engineering major advisor, Jenna can help connect you with one.

For our graduate students and researchers, while research across Dartmouth remains paused, we are hopeful that Thayer labs will gradually resume operation in some capacity soon. Dartmouth is exploring how we can safely ramp-up research activities through creative scheduling, proper safety precautions, and social distancing practices. Our priority remains the health and well-being of our community, and guided by that principle, we look forward to the day when we can safely welcome our graduate students and researchers back to our labs. 

This has not been the year that any of us imagined, to say the least, and these changes remain a challenge for every member of our community. I continue to be deeply moved by the resilience, creativity, and problem-solving skills of all as we navigate this uncharted territory together with empathy and care.
