Date: July 31, 2020

From: Candace Potter

Dear incoming graduate students,

We hope this email finds you well and that you are enjoying your summer. All of us at Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth look forward to meeting you soon, either virtually or in-person, as we prepare for your arrival to Dartmouth and the Hanover, NH area. In the weeks to come, we will be sending additional information regarding pre-matriculation forms, Thayer’s virtual orientation, teaching assistant positions, and more.  Note: You will receive a separate email soon regarding course information from Thayer School’s registrar, Daryl Laware. In the meantime, we hope the following information will be useful for planning your arrival.

This message contains information on the following:

Required COVID Testing and Quarantine Guidelines

Required Testing

All new and returning students will be required to get COVID tested upon arrival to the Hanover area and again, seven days after.

Incoming graduate students will be tested at Dartmouth’s Health Services (Located inside Dick’s House at 7 Rope Ferry Road in Hanover) between 1:00–2:00pm, M–F. Please call +1 (603) 646-9401 prior to the date of your arrival to make an appointment. If you arrive on a weekend, your testing will be scheduled for the following Monday. Please identify yourself as an incoming Thayer graduate student. The cost of testing will be covered by the Dartmouth College Health Plan.

Guidelines for Quarantine

All students returning to or arriving at Dartmouth during the 2020–2021 academic year will be expected to follow Dartmouth's quarantine guidelines. Because of the unavoidable close interactions that occur on college campuses, Dartmouth has established guidelines that exceed those prescribed by the state of New Hampshire.

Please read the guidelines for quarantine before you arrive in the Hanover, NH-area, and continue to check for updates as you arrive as guidelines change frequently. We will also email you with any major updates.

State guidelines for New Hampshire and Vermont

In addition to Dartmouth’s guidelines, students should also follow the safety protocols and guidance of the state in which they reside. Please be sure to abide by the mandated guidelines of New Hampshire or Vermont, checking frequently for updated information.

Please also see Dartmouth Health Services Quarantine FAQs.

Food Pick-up and Delivery Options

During quarantine, students have several options for food delivery or curbside pick-up:

Dartmouth’s Office of Visa and Immigration Services (OVIS) will hold a Town Hall Q&A Session for new and continuing international students on Tuesday, August 4th from 10:00–11:00am (EST). Please join us using this link.

Letter for International Students Traveling to the US:
For international students traveling to the United States, Thayer School can provide a letter from your Program Director with details of your program start date and learning format (both in-person and remote learning) to help facilitate your travel to the United States. Please email me at csp@dartmouth.edu at least a week prior to your date of travel and we will email you a letter on Thayer School of Engineering letterhead.

Resources and Campus Organizations for International Graduate Students:

DartCard Information

The Dartmouth Card (DartCard) is your official College ID and is used for almost all campus services, including dining plans, checking out library books, accessing buildings, and attending athletic events. New incoming students should submit a photo to the DartCard office to receive your ID card in a timely fashion upon your arrival. Please submit your photo using GET CBORD Student and as a free app in mobile device stores. We recommend using the mobile app for the best user experience.  Photos must be submitted no later than August 7, and don’t forget to smile!  Note: Dartmouth undergraduates who will now enroll as Thayer School student will need this new ID card.

For more information, visit the DartCard webpage.

Housing and Travel Information

Housing Resources

If you are still looking for housing the Hanover area, please try the following listings:

Travel to Hanover/Upper Valley

Directions to Dartmouth and the local Upper Valley area by both ground and air transportation can be found on Dartmouth’s travel and directions page

Dartmouth Coach

Many students use the Dartmouth Coach (bus service) as part of their travel to Dartmouth from Boston or New York, and bus service is currently paused due to COVID-19. The Dartmouth Coach is planning to resume service in mid-August. If you plan to include the Dartmouth Coach as part of your travel, please sign up for travel alert emails and/or monitor the Dartmouth Coach website for updates. All new service information will be posted on their website, as soon as it becomes available.

We know this is a lot of information all at once, but in this ever-changing atmosphere our hope is to keep you as well informed as possible. Please feel free to let us know if there are other topics you would like us to cover.

All the best!
Candace
