Juan Pablo Fernández was born in Bogotá, Colombia, in 1967. He earned the degree of Físico from the Universidad de los Andes in 1990, a Ph.D. in theoretical low-temperature physics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2004, and an M.S. in engineering physics from Dartmouth College in 2007.
He has taught physics, mathematics, astronomy, and Spanish at the Universidad de los Andes, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Amherst College, Smith College, and Lebanon College. He has worked as a writer, editor, and translator, and managed the processing of grant proposals for the Instituto Colombiano para el Desarrollo de la Ciencia y la Tecnología, "Colciencias".
He was awarded a "Francisco de Paula Santander" grant for creative writing by the Instituto Colombiano de Cultura in 1990, was shortlisted for the Premio Nacional de Literatura in 1998, and received the Eugene M. Isenberg Award from the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts in 1997 and 1998.
His current research involves the discrimination of unexploded ordnance (UXO). He started smoking in 1987 and quit in 2008.
