The Mazilu Engineering Research Fellowship

This Fellowship was created by Jaime Mazilu '05 Th'06 via Saguaro Technology, Inc., a company founded and run by her mother, Doina Mazilu. The goal of the fellowship is to encourage students to pursue graduate studies and academic engineering careers in the United States.

The award of up to $10,000 will support a student for a full academic year (3 to 4 terms) of research, including one off-term. The amount of the fellowship will be fixed at the time of the award. The off-term budget may include a stipend of up to $4,500 for the student, with the remainder of funds applied to supplies and other project costs as approved by the faculty mentor.

Eligibility

To be eligible, students must be engineering sciences majors in the A.B. and/or B.E. program at Dartmouth/Thayer School and be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Students must have a principal investigator within Thayer School.

Application Process

Deadline: Applications should be delivered to the dean's assistant in Cummings 204 no later than March 1.

Applications will be reviewed by a committee composed of the senior associate dean for academic affairs, the department chair, and the B.E. program chair. To apply, students must submit the following documents:

  1. A completed face page (Download Adobe PDF file icon Face page form (PDF))
  2. Transcripts
  3. A research proposal of the project to be completed (Please include any relevant preliminary data completed by the lab and/or the applicant prior to this date. Max. 3 pages, including images and references.)
  4. A budget outlining how the funds will be allocated (max. 1 page)
  5. A resume (max. 1 page)
  6. A statement of the student's career goals, including discussion of the applicant's interest in pursuing an academic/research career in the United States (max. 1/2 page)
  7. Two recommendations: one from the principal investigator and one from another Dartmouth faculty member (from Thayer School or any other department at Dartmouth. Max. 2 pages for each.)

All documents must be submitted with the following format: 1 inch margins, Times New Roman font, 12 point. Documents that are incomplete, exceed the page limitations, and/or do not adhere to the format guidelines will not be considered.

Project Reporting

Students will submit a final report to the Thayer School faculty mentor and to the Mazilu family at the conclusion of the research experience. This report will be written in the established Thayer School thesis format; there is no page limit for this report. A final culminating presentation is also required, whereby the student will present his/her research to the selection committee, highlighting the goals of the research, significant results, and implications for future research. The Mazilu family will make every possible effort to attend this presentation.
