MacLean Engineering Sciences Center (ESC) Open for Business!

MacLean ESC, a new addition to Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth, officially opened its doors on September 29th, 2006. Alumni, friends, and members of the Dartmouth and surrounding communities gathered together for a day full of celebration and reflection.

Events included a keynote address entitled "Anatomy of a Home Run: The GlycoFi Story," by Professor of Engineering Tillman Gerngross and Krehbiel Professor for Emerging Technologies and Dean, Emeritus Charles Hutchinson. Gerngross and Hutchinson, co-founders of the biotech firm GlycoFi, Inc., detailed the success of their company that started just six years ago in a small Thayer School lab and is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Merck & Co. successfully creating the world's "Next Generation Biotherapeutics™." Merck's purchase of GlycoFi was the largest all-cash acquisition of a private biotechnology company in history.

Thayer School Dean Joseph Helble presided over the dedication ceremony before a standing-room-only crowd in MacLean's "GlycoFi Atrium." Dartmouth Trustee Nancy Jeton formally accepted the building from architects Koetter, Kim & Associates to mark the official opening. The ceremony continued with remarks by Dartmouth President James Wright, Professor of Engineering William Lotko, Co-Presidents of the Thayer [student] Council Johnathan Loudis and Meredith Lunn, and finally by Barry MacLean '60 Th'61, who noted that the occasion had inspired the largest ever gathering of his extended family.

The ceremony concluded with a surprise performance of the "MacLean Engineering Sciences Center Dedication Song," written and performed by the Dartmouth student singing group, the Dodecaphonics.

A reception and tours of the facility followed.

MacLean ESC has been fully funded through generous donations from alumni and friends of the School.
