Setting up Tools

This training module will teach you how to properly set up the four most common of the 13 tool types used on lathes: Tool #1, Tool #6, Tool #7 and Tool #10. It assumes that the machine has already been turned on and the piece of material to be machine is loaded in the collet or chuck, preferably 0.5” diameter stock. 

Figure 1 shows the 13 Tool Types with their corresponding tool descriptions.

  • Select MODE to get to the control’s Main Menu (Fig. 2)

Tool #1- typically the first tool used on a lathe project, is a right hand turn/face tool used for “turning” material off the outside diameter of the stock and “facing” material off the end of the stock. This tool can be used in either Digital Read Out (DRO) or Computer Numerical Control (CNC) modes.

  • Select DRO from control’s main menu
  • Press SPIN SPEED then [1000] and press Inc Set to set speed to 1000 rpm
  • Press MODE to get to control’s main menu
  • Press SETUP
  • Press TOOL SETUP
  • Enter [1] Abs Set  to indicate that you intend to define TOOL #1
  • Select EDIT to enter information needed to define TOOL #1
  • Load TOOL #1 in the tool post
  • The dialogue box instructs you to move the tool to a known position in X
  • Using the Hand Wheels – bring the tool just off the face of the part, start the spindle and take a light cut on the outside diameter (OD) of the part. This cut wants to be wide enough to conveniently measure the diameter; about the width of a pencil, will do. Without moving the x axis hand wheel, move the tool off the material by using only the Z axis hand wheel. Stop the spindle and take a measurement of the OD.
  • For demonstration – imagine our measured value after the skin cut was 0.48”
  • In this case our response to the dialogue box instruction to move the tool to a known position in X
  • Enter [0.48] Abs Setto set X
  • The dialogue box instructs you to move the tool to a known position in Z
  • Using the Hand Wheels – bring the tool just off the face of the part, start the spindle and take a light cut on the face of the part.
  • Enter [0] Abs Setto set Z
  • Enter [.015] Abs Setto set the tool nose radius
  • Move tool away from part
  • Press BACKto prepare to set up the next tool

Tool #6– is a cutoff tool used on a lathe to separate a part from the rest of the bar stock. This tool can be used in either DRO or CNC modes

 

  • Enter [6] Abs Setto indicate that you intend to define TOOL #6
  • Select EDIT to enter information needed to define TOOL #6
  • Load TOOL #6 in the tool post
  • The dialogue box instructs you to move the tool to a known position in X. Because you just finished setting up Tool #1, you can turn on the spindle and, using the Hand Wheels, just touch the tool tip on the 0.48” diameter.
  • Enter [0.48] Abs Set to set X
  • The dialogue box instructs you to move the tool to a known position in Z
  • Using the Hand Wheels – bring the tool just off the face of the part and just touch the left edge of the cutoff tool insert on the face of the part. Notice in the graphic area of the screen that the SET Z reference is on the right hand side of the cutoff tool insert. The cutoff tool insert is 0.125” wide, so when you touch the left edge to the face of the part, the reference edge is 0.125” away from Z origin
  • Enter [.125] Abs Set to set Z origin
  • Using the Hand Wheels, move the tool away from the part and turn off the spindle
  • Move tool away from part
  • Press BACK to prepare to set up the next tool

Tool #7– is a tool used to cut external screw threads into a cylinder. This process is often referred to as “single-pointing” threads. On these lathes, this operation can only be performed in CNC mode.

  • Enter [7] Abs Set to indicate that you intend to define TOOL #7
  • Select EDIT to enter information needed to define TOOL #7
  • Load TOOL #7 in the tool post
  • The dialogue box instructs you to move the tool to a known position in X. Because you just finished setting up Tool #1, you can turn on the spindle and, using the Hand Wheels, just touch the tool tip on the 0.48” diameter.
  • Enter [0.48] Abs Set to set X
  • The dialogue box instructs you to move the tool to a known position in Z
  • Using the Hand Wheels – bring the tool just off the face of the part and just touch the left edge of the threading tool insert on the face of the part.
  • Enter [0] Abs Set to set Z
  • Using the Hand Wheels, move the tool away from the part and turn off the spindle.
  • SPECIAL NOTE:The Thread OD tool, at this point will not cut a thread to specifications; it will only be close. A thread will need to be cut and measured and a Tool Offset will need to be applied to fine tune the tool.
  • Move tool away from part
  • Press BACK to prepare to set up the next tool

Tool #10– is a tool used to cut external grooves into the OD of a cylinder. On these lathes, this operation can be performed in DRO or CNC modes.

  • Enter [10] Abs Setto indicate that you intend to define TOOL #10
  • Select EDIT to enter information needed to define TOOL #10
  • Load TOOL #10 in the tool post
  • The dialogue box instructs you to move the tool to a known position in X. Because you just finished setting up Tool #1, you can turn on the spindle and, using the hand wheels, just touch the tool tip on the 0.48” diameter.
  • Enter [0.48] Abs Set to set X
  • The dialogue box instructs you to move the tool to a known position in Z
  • Using the Hand Wheels – bring the tool just off the face of the part and just touch the left edge of the groove tool insert on the face of the part.
  • Enter [0] Abs Setto set Z
  • Enter [0] Abs Setto set the tool nose RADIUS
  • Measure the width of the groove tool insert (with the spindle off, of course).
  • For demonstration – imagine our measured value was 0.118”
  • Enter [.118] Abs Set to set the WIDTH
  • Move tool away from part
  • At this point, all 4 tools are set up!
  • Press RETURN to exit TOOL SETUP

Press DRO and notice that the “Active” Tool Number is the same as the last tool edited. Remember to ALWAYS change the TOOL # WHENEVER you change the tool.
