TA Orientation

This orientation module is required reading for all new TA’s assigned to the Thayer School Machine Shop.

Before your first day

  • Complete your safety orientation with Machine Shop instructors and fill out the safety orientation form.
  • If you are a new hired TA, you need to fill out the student intake form from Thayer Payroll Office. 
  • Sign your Machine Shop TA agreement at the beginning of each term. 
  • Email your work schedule to mshop@dartmouth.edu, and keep us updated with and changes.

Starting your shift

  1. Arrive at the Machine Shop on time for your shift. Send email message to mshop@dartmouth.edu if you will miss your shift or if you will be late for your shift. 
  2. Log in as a TA.
  3. Check your task on the snap schedule. 
  4. Grab your daily timesheets from the box under the log in computer.  
  5. If you are not assigned a task, check with the greeter and the on-duty instructor. Also, grab a blank daily timesheets from the box under the log in computer.
  6. Take your hat, glass, and your TA badge.
  7. Enter the shop and notify the on-duty instructor.

During your shift

  • Stay productive, helpful, and cheerful.
  • Work on your task based on your daily timesheets and write down the actual time your work for each task.
  • If you work for tasks that are not put on your daily timesheets or if you change your task, you should write down the actual task you work during your shift. 
  • Notify the on duty instructor and the greeter if you intend to leave the Machine Shop (for breaks, meetings, lunch). Write down your name on the white board with the actual time.
  • You could take 15 minutes break for every 2 hours. If you work over 6 hours a day, you should take 1 hour lunch break and log out from the system.

Ending your shift

  1. Log out.
  2. Complete your daily time sheets and return it to the greeter table.

Orientation Review

  • Log in and log out in order to get your hours to be recorded correctly. 
  • Record your actual work at your daily time-sheets. 
  • Always take your TA badge.
