Thomas Scanlon Carol Basbaum Memorial Research Fellow Thomas.C.Scanlon@Dartmouth.edu Telephone: (603) 646-9245 Tom Scanlon arrived in the Griswold Laboratory at the Thayer School of Engineering in 2007 after winning a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Designated as the Carol Bausbaum Memorial Research Fellow, his proposal to leverage protein engineering for the development of novel antibacterial enzymes for the treatment of Cystic Fibrosis was given the top priority score in a national competition. Since joining the lab, Tom has developed several high throughput screening platforms for interrogating combinatorial enzyme libraries. These efforts have led to the identification of new antibiotic agents that have proven successful in reducing bacterial burden in mouse models of lung infection. Tom received a B.Sc. from McGill University, majoring in Biology with a minor in Biotechnology. In 2001, he started his research career in the laboratory of Dr. Roger Gosden at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Quebec, investigating gene regulation patterns in mouse development using real time PCR. Tom pursued graduate studies at McGill University, working in the lab of Dr. Mark Trifro at the Jewish General Hospital. He received a Ph.D. in 2007 for his work in establishing a role for proteasome dysfunction in human neuronal disease. |
