M.E.M. Student Life

Joining one of 15 or so professional, social, or service student organizations is a golden opportunity to come together with M.E.M. classmates and other engineering students with common interests. The M.E.M. Council offers students a chance to organize career panels or mentor prospective M.E.M. students.

M.E.M. Council

Jake McCarter Jake McCarter, M.E.M. Council President

"The M.E.M. Council (MEMC) is a group of students who focus on addressing the professional, academic and social needs of current and future M.E.M.'s by working closely with the administration of Thayer School and the M.E.M. program to enact initiatives, plan events and facilitate program development. The accomplishments of the MEMC are not limited by any particular theme or structure. Organizing information sessions, founding professional clubs, communicating with prospective students and planning a semi-formal social event are only a few examples of our recent endeavors, and we continue to pursue any idea with a purpose."

"We recognize that although we are a specialized set of individuals, we are part of the larger community at Dartmouth, and thus make an effort to work with other student groups and organizations to help them achieve their goals. Many students participate in an after-school science program with local elementary schools and others have contributed to the annual Steak and Champagne dinner hosted by the Dartmouth Society of Engineers. As M.E.M.'s we share many common goals and interests, despite our highly differentiated backgrounds and experiences. The initiatives and events of the MEMC are instrumental in utilizing the diversity of the students to achieve the collaborative learning environment that makes the program a success. Social events such as Thayer bowling night, potluck dinners and ski days have been highly effective in fostering M.E.M. spirit and bringing students together in a non-academic setting."

"My involvement in the MEMC has been invaluable to my experience at Dartmouth. As a new student, the MEMC immediately introduced me to many other M.E.M.'s and allowed me to begin contributing to the program as soon as I arrived. In this position of leadership I learned how to organize and run events as well as all the skills needed to lead an effective organization. Establishing relationships with the administration and faculty of the program and working alongside a diverse set of accomplished individuals has added an element to my M.E.M. experience that I've found to be very rewarding."
