About the Speaker

Robert Metcalfe Bob Metcalfe, Professor of Innovation, Murchison Fellow of Free Enterprise

A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and recipient of the National Medal of Technology, Bob Metcalfe, Ph.D., is currently Professor of Innovation and Murchison Fellow of Free Enterprise in The University of Texas at Austin’s Cockrell School of Engineering.

Prior to joining UT Austin, Metcalfe was a partner at Polaris Venture Partners, a publisher and columnist, founder of 3Com Corp., and a scientist-engineer at the Computer Science Laboratory of the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center.

Metcalfe graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1969 with two bachelor degrees in electrical engineering and in industrial management. He received a master’s degree in applied mathematics from Harvard University in 1970, and his Ph.D. in computer science from Harvard in 1973.
