DFR-Hybrid
In 2003, Thayer students began researching their first hybrid racecar. The group's goal was to use the torque of an electric motor to maximize racing performance at the Formula SAE competition that DFR competes in every year against 140 other schools. While this work was in progress, however, the Formula SAE competition rules were changed to disallow hybrid entries. From this prohibition spawned the Formula Hybrid™ competition, sponsored by SAE, IEEE, and our very own Thayer School. Formula Hybrid builds upon the FSAE program but with a transferred focus to high performance hybrid technology. The inaugural event is scheduled for May 2007, and as of now at least 20 other schools have expressed interest in entering a vehicle.
Working side-by-side with DFR, the newly formed DFR-Hybrid team now builds a racecar each year. With two working prototypes, the 2007 DFR-Hybrid team will build upon the progress of the previous years, with a focus on fuel efficiency, weight minimization, and overall racecar performance and aesthetics. Students have the opportunity to learn about, design, and implement cutting edge hybrid technology. Students on the DFR-Hybrid team will be among the pioneers of the high performance hybrid automotive field, with our final product being both a high performance and fuel efficient formula-style racecar.
