DBEC: Metal-on-Metal Hips - Is Corrosion Affecting the Latest Generation?

A number of retrieved CoCr metal-on-metal components have demonstrated considerable corrosion. To date we have evaluated the metallurgy of the components and investigated the role of carbon content, carbides, grain structure and homogeneity but none of these variables could be found to be directly correlated with extent of corrosion. The role of the titanium shells and stems is being studied to determine the extent to which the phenomena of fretting, crevice corrosion and galvanic effects may be involved.
