The following three sections include the primary job and internship search tools available to Thayer students. You may also find our additional resources useful in your search.

The "Engineering - Career Services" Blitzmail Bulletin is also used for posting up-to-date information on recruiting programs, events and other special announcements. Please monitor this bulletin to be sure to see all opportunities.

Targeting Employers through Networking

75% of all jobs are found through networking! So it is important that you incorporate networking into your job or internship search.

You may use networking to:
1. Identify organization/positions that interest you
2. Learn more about organizations and positions for which you are applying, to perfect your application or prepare for an interview (i.e. increase your chances of landing the job).
3. Find additional contacts that may be helpful with #1 or #2

The following resources provide recommended procedures or instructions for establishing these networking connections. You may also want to check out our networking tips and "Researching Employers" page which includes a wealth of resources for identify industries, companies or careers of interest.

Thayer Connections

Thayer's Target Employer Connections (T.E.C.) - a database of companies, contacts and tips for pursuing internships and full-time jobs at "Target" organizations. Thayer students only - Please see Thayer Career Services for access to this database.

Employers hiring Thayer Grads (1997-present) and Adobe PDF file icon Employers hiring Thayer Interns (2005-2008), may also be good starting points for targeting organizations.

LinkedIn (Thayer School of Engineering Group) * NEW * - an online networking and resource group for alumni, students, faculty, and staff interested in building professional networking connections.

Dartmouth Connections

Dartmouth Career Network provides access to more than 23,000 Dartmouth alumni (including Thayer alumni) who have volunteered to advise students and fellow alumni in their job, career, and graduate school explorations.

To access the DCN, you will need to set up a password for the VOX Online Network. Please note your password must be 8 characters long.

You must read the recommended procedures provided in the DCN before contacting an alum. Please note: When emailing any alum, please use the utmost respect. In general – use common courtesy:

  • Address the alum appropriately, "Dear Mr./Ms. Doe"
  • Do NOT assume the person will assist you
  • In your INITIAL correspondence do NOT say "please send me contact information for your recruiter"
  • Do NOT send them a resume unless they ask
  • NEVER ask them to help you get an interview or position
  • Respond promptly to their requests/questions
  • ALWAYS thank them for their responses or help
  • Follow-up to let them know the outcome of your search

MentorNet is an e-mentoring network partnering undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and untenured faculty in engineering, science and mathematics with experienced professionals in their fields. MentorNet is open to all Dartmouth and Thayer students.
