M.E.M. Tuition, Expenses, and Financial Aid

Tuition for 2008-2009 is $12,230 per term, which covers instruction, use of instructional facilities, and health care service through the College infirmary. Hospital-care insurance, for students without their own hospital insurance, must be purchased at a cost of approximately $1,600 per year. (See Dartmouth College Health Service for details.)

Most M.E.M. students choose to work on their Master of Engineering Management Project (ENGG 390) during the summer term, but some students do ENGG 390 work in other academic terms. Students must enroll for ENGG 390 in the term in which they do their internship. If a student is not enrolled in any other courses while completing ENGG 390, a partial tuition charge, set at 15% of full term tuition, is assessed. A student may not enroll in ENGG 390 when also enrolled in more than one other course in that term.

An average figure for support of a single student, including tuition, books, board, room, and incidentals will be approximately $54,000 for the academic year 2008-2009. Financial aid can significantly lower the yearly cost.

Financial Aid

For full-time students, Thayer School offers an array of financial aid. All awards are contingent upon continued satisfactory performance and academic progress. Apply for financial aid.

Full-time M.E.M. students are eligible for partial tuition scholarships, hourly employment as teaching assistants or in other capacities, fellowships, and loans. Assessment of need is based on the PROFILE application for U.S. applicants. International applicants must complete an International Student Financial Aid Application. Awards are made annually on an academic year basis.

M.E.M. students are eligible to apply for federal Stafford Loans, federal Perkins loans, and DELC Loans through the Dartmouth Financial Aid Office. Educational loan applicants must complete and submit a "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" (FAFSA) form. This form may be obtained at www.fafsa.ed.gov. For more information, please visit Graduate Arts & Sciences Financial Aid Web site.

Hourly Teaching Assistantships and Other Employment

Teaching assistantships may be available to well-qualified students. A teaching assistant is paid hourly to assist with grading, problem sessions, and/or lab work. Assignments are made on a term by term basis. Other limited hourly employment is also available to qualified students.

Hourly rates depend on the nature of the work and the student's ability. Limitations on the number of hours worked, established by the faculty member in charge, are normally no more than 12 hours per week during academic terms and 40 hours per week between terms and during off-terms. Hourly employment may not exceed a total of 40 hours per week from any and all College sources.

Partial Tuition Scholarships

Scholarships applicable to tuition charges are awarded on the basis of need, as demonstrated by the PROFILE application or the International Student Financial Aid Application. Scholarships are renewed each academic year contingent upon continuous satisfactory academic progress.

The M.E.M. program is a professional program where students take classes, but are not required to conduct research (unlike M.S. and Ph.D. programs). Most professional programs (including the MBA, MD, and JD degrees) offer little or no financial aid. Our M.E.M. program is very happy to be able to even offer partial tuition scholarships to students with need.

Named Fellowships

Endowed named scholarships and fellowships, established through the generosity of alumni/ae, friends, foundations, and corporations, are awarded to engineering students with financial need who have demonstrated academic ability and show promise of contributing to the engineering profession.
