Apply for Financial Aid and Loans

Apply for Financial Aid

Who Should Apply

  • B.E. applicants
  • M.E.M. applicants

Typically, M.S. and Ph.D. students are fully funded through research and do not need to apply for financial aid.

M.E.M. financial aid is need-based and is in the form of partial tuition scholarships. After an M.E.M. internship or after any leave term during the M.E.M. program, Thayer School expects the student to contribute a minimum of $3000 toward tuition costs.

How to Apply

  1. Download the Adobe PDF file icon Thayer School B.E. and M.E.M. Financial Aid Information Sheet (PDF).

  2. Fill out the application form. See application details below.

US resident applicants apply for financial aid by filing the PROFILE form. Apply online at profileonline.collegeboard.com. Thayer School's PROFILE number is 3355.

International applicants apply for financial aid by completing the Adobe PDF file icon Foreign Student Financial Aid Application (PDF). There is currently no online submission process, so you must print and complete the Foreign Student Financial Aid Application, which is also available in the Academic and Student Affairs Office, MacLean 103.

  3. Return the completed application, along with the application for the program and supporting documents, to:

    Academic & Student Affairs Office
    Attention: Candace Potter
Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth
    8000 Cummings Hall
    Hanover, NH 03755 Fax: 603-646-1620

Students planning to complete B.E. and M.E.M. requirements simultaneously should submit a Adobe PDF file icon B.E. program plan (PDF) along with the M.E.M. application to be considered for "B.E." aid for any portion of the program. (This form is also available in the Academic and Student Affairs Office, MacLean 103.)

Financial aid received for the first year does not necessarily carry over into the second year. Students planning to enroll at Thayer School for more than one academic year have to re-file the PROFILE or International Student Financial Aid Application each year.

Application Details

Dependent or independent?

B.E. applicants file as a dependent student and must include parental information. Exceptions include students who are:

  • over 24 years of age
  • married
  • have legal dependents other than a spouse
  • have served in the military
  • orphans or wards of the state

M.E.M. applicants are considered independent of their parents and do not include parental information when applying for aid.

M.E.M. financial aid is need-based and partial tuition scholarships are capped.

B.E./M.E.M. candidates from Dartmouth who plan to work simultaneously on B.E. and M.E.M. requirements should include parental information so that both B.E. and M.E.M. level aid may be calculated by Thayer School. For the time a student is completing the B.E. requirements (generally 1 to 3 terms), Thayer School will grant whichever aid is higher, B.E. or M.E.M.

Financial Aid Decisions

Thayer School makes financial aid decisions as soon as possible after the results of the PROFILE or the International Student Financial Aid Application from the College Board are received.

Paid hourly employment as a Teaching Assistant may also be available for qualified students.
