Program options:
- Ph.D. Innovation Program applicants must submit additional materials.
- Applicants to the Ph.D. program combined with the IGERT program in Polar Environmental Change should clearly indicate their desire to participate in the IGERT program. Applicants should also contact the IGERT program to indicate their interest.
- M.D./M.S. and M.D./Ph.D. applicants must apply to both Thayer School and The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.
Matching Interests to Faculty
M.S. and Ph.D. students typically are funded through a professor’s sponsored research or a fellowship throughout their studies at Thayer School. Therefore, M.S. and Ph.D. applicants interested in pursuing particular areas of research should contact Thayer School faculty for an initial conversation about research opportunities. During the application process, applicants should indicate all areas of interest in order to be considered for the widest possible range of opportunities.
Interviews
Interviews are encouraged for applicants to all programs, but are not required. To schedule an appointment, call (603) 646-2606 or email engineering.admissions@dartmouth.edu.
Application Deadlines
For M.S., and Ph.D. programs, the deadline for priority consideration is January 1. In most cases the Admissions Committee will render decisions between April 1 and April 15.
The M.E.M. program has three admissions periods:
- Period 1: For applications received by January 15, students will receive notification by February 15 and must send a deposit by March 15 to reserve a place in the program.
- Period 2: For applications received by March 15, students will receive notification by April 15 and must send a deposit by May 15 to reserve a place in the program.
- Period 3: For applications received after March 15, applications are processed within one month, on a space-available basis.
Wait-list notifications begin on April 15, space permitting. M.E.M. program applicants must apply for financial aid concurrent with submitting their application for admission.
Requirements
Graduates of programs other than the Dartmouth A.B. and the Thayer School Dual-Degree program must submit scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). Students whose native language is not English must also submit evidence of satisfactory completion of Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
Students admitted with engineering deficiencies must complete required undergraduate engineering courses. Students who need more than three courses will enroll initially as a special student. Students with insufficient engineering background may want to apply to the Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) program.
Part-Time/Special Students
Part-time studies are available for residents of the Upper Valley who can meet the requirements for admission. Special and part-time students are ineligible for Thayer School financial aid.
