MacLean ESC embodies Thayer School's uniquely integrative approach to engineering education. Designed according to the principle that creativity thrives in synergetic surroundings, MacLean reveals the inner workings of engineering by allowing easy observation of works-in-progress. For students and faculty, this can inspire new ideas and associations. For visitors to Thayer—from prospective students to non-engineers—MacLean is a window into the ingenuity and creativity of engineering.
MacLean's stunning facilities represent the conviction of the administration and faculty that the space must represent their vision for educating the engineer of the future. Student project laboratories support team-based design work and hands-on learning. Studio classrooms and conference rooms on every floor facilitate collaboration and enhance a sense of community. Networked computing and multimedia systems throughout the building connect and expand the research and learning environment, and next-generation research laboratories extend the capabilities of faculty and students for discovery and innovation.
Thayer School's Board of Overseers, under the chairmanship of John W. Ballard '55 TT'56, supported this vision by providing the leadership and resources that have resulted in MacLean ESC, named for lead donors Barry '60 Th'61 and Mary Ann MacLean. The Center increases Thayer School's facilities by more than 60 percent, providing space to grow strategically while maintaining an environment that fosters collaboration, community, and close student-faculty interaction.
The result is a building that welcomes people into engineering and enables students and faculty to reach new heights of innovation in education and research.
