Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Energy

Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth seeks to hire a faculty member who can contribute to a distinctive research and education program addressing technology responses to societal energy challenges. The successful candidate will have a doctorate in engineering or closely related field, will show promise of leading an externally-funded research program targeting transformational advances in energy conversion and/or utilization, and will be a gifted teacher with motivation and expertise that complements Thayer School's interdisciplinary curriculum. All fields of engineering will be considered. Applications of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Material science and engineering: solar power generation, energy storage, and advanced materials promoting efficient energy conversion and utilization – e.g. in the wind energy or automotive fields.

  • Chemical engineering: fuel cells, gasification, reforming, and upgrading of fuels, and applied catalysis and reactor design enabling large energy benefits.

  • Electrical engineering: low carbon and/or efficient electricity production (by any means), electrical energy storage and distribution, electric machines, efficient utilization of electricity, and control systems targeting large energy benefits.

  • Mechanical engineering, including thermal/fluids: wind and wave energy, geothermal energy, solar thermal, and energy-efficient manufacturing, heating, and cooling.

A hire at the Assistant Professor rank is anticipated, although outstanding candidates at the Associate Professor level will be considered.

Staff Positions

Research Associate B

Join a group working on applied microbiology and biotechnology related to renewable fuel production from lignocellulose. The focus of this position is to be genetic tool development and investigation of cellulose hydrolysis in thermophilic, cellulolytic Clostridia. Work directed toward this theme will be informed by close collaborative relationships with the DOE Bioenergy Science Center and industry.

Skills & Knowledge:

  • The applicant should be well versed in techniques of molecular biology and microbiology.
  • Experience with genetics and physiology is highly desired.
  • Skills associated with cultivation of obligate anaerobes and/or thermophiles are also desired but not required.

Minimum Experience:

  • At a minimum, completion of a Ph.D. on a relevant topic, more senior candidates will be considered.
  • Experience with development of microorganisms for industrial application would be a plus but is not required.

Minimum Education:

  • Ph.D. in microbiology, molecular biology, or closely related discipline required.

Research Associate B

Join a group developing medical imaging devices based on electrical impedance tomography for use in image-guided prostate biopsy. This position involves implementing high-speed image reconstruction algorithms in electrical impedance tomography. This group member will be directly responsible for developing and programming advanced 3D FEM algorithms directly onto graphical processing unit (GPUs) for real-time imaging. This position will also involve developing fusion algorithms for linking electrical and ultrasound images and analysis of phantom and clinical images for algorithm assessment.

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of research methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Exceptional organizational and management skills to plan and organize the research approach and project parameters.
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills.

Minimum Experience:

Prior research in the following areas is desirable:

  • Large FEM models
  • Efficient solvers for inverse problems
  • GPU programming (CUDA)
  • Image fusion
  • Soft-field tomography
  • C/C++

Minimum Education:

  • MS/PhD degree with a major in computer science, electrical engineering, or similar.

Laboratory Technician III

Note: Internal candidates currently under consideration.

Perform routine tests and other laboratory duties as directed in support of research related to developing bioconversion processes for renewable energy production.

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with basic laboratory procedures and equipment.

Minimum Experience:

  • Six months of relevant laboratory or science experience.

Electronics Technician

Under general supervision, repairs, calibrates, and maintains electronic and electromechanical equipment. Repairs equipment to comply with OSHA and with local, state, federal guidelines and regulations. Sets up instrumentation in teaching laboratories and lecture halls. Advises students, faculty, and staff in the selection of electronic parts and instrumentation at the Instrument Room window. Serves as a technical resource and electrical specialist in the areas assigned. Orders and maintains stock of electronic parts. Assists in the overall operation of the Instrument Room.

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Electronic, electromechanical and digital equipment, construction, repair and use.
  • Working knowledge of research and laboratory equipment.
  • Organizational skills to maintain spare parts inventory.
  • Knowledge of computers and software applications.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills for interaction with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and vendors.
  • Skills in one or more of the following are desirable: mechanical design construction, and repair and metal shop processes.

Research Associate C

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, prototyping, and testing of high frequency and line frequency power electronics with power levels from 100W to MW levels for pulsed power applications.
