The 1st Annual Thayer Common Good Day

You are being invited to register for the first edition of the Thayer Common Good Day. Please read on!

As part of Thayer's mission, the Dartmouth Society of Engineers is hosting the 1st Edition of the Annual Thayer Common Good Day. During this day, all members of the Thayer community (students, staff, faculty and friends) will have the opportunity to lend a hand for 3-4 hours to local organizations that know where help is most needed.

Here are three reasons why you should sign-up.

(1) Because Sylvanus Thayer's vision was for Thayer to be a place for people to use their engineering skills to promote the "common good" as responsible professionals. This is one opportunity for you to be proactive about demonstrating this connection.

(2) Thayer needs you! It has committed to the organizations below, and we must absolutely be able to follow through.

(3) The holidays are around the corner. Have you been good this year?

We hope to see students, faculty, staff and friends out in the field on December 12th, 2008!

OPTION 1: COVER Home Repair [Home Weatherization] *FULL* Help prepare houses for the cold winter months. We need as many people as possible to caulk holes, wrap pipes with foam, place weatherstrips on leaky doors and plastic on leaky windows. Contact Kara.Podkaminer@Dartmouth.EDU if you have questions relating to this project. Note that tools and materials will be provided. Time commitment: 12:00 - 4:00pm

OPTION 2: Students Fighting Hunger [Prepare a Community Dinner] *FULL* We need five volunteers to cook a community dinner hosted on School St, Hanover. The hosts of the dinner prepare the meal and then eat with the guests who arrive. Please contact Jonathan.Bessette@Dartmouth.EDU or Florian.H.Schmitt@Dartmouth.edu if you have questions relating to this project. Time commitment: 3:30pm - 6:00pm

OPTION 3: Upper Valley Trails Association [Clean a Hiking Trail in Norwich] *FULL* We need six people to cut and screw wooden framework and to fill the ramps with gravel on a hiking trail in Norwich, VT. Volunteers meet in the parking lot of King Arthur Flour. Please contact David.Lukofsky@Dartmouth.EDU if you have questions relating to this project. Note that tools will be provided. Time commitment: 12:00 - 4:00pm

OPTION 4: Good Beginnings [Prepare an Information Packet for New Parents] *FULL* We need three volunteers to help prepare Health & Safety packets to provide to parents with new babies and young children. This is a two-hour commitment. Please contact Clara.Smith@Dartmouth.EDU if you have questions relating to this project. Time commitment: 2:00pm - 4:00pm

OPTION 5: Green Mountain Children Center [Decorate the 'North Pole' with highschoolers] *FULL* We need ten people to help decorate a holiday themed 'North Pole' in White River Junction. Local highschoolers do the artwork, and you will help setting it up. Please contact Ashley.Martin@Dartmouth.EDU if you have questions relating to this project. Time commitment: 12:00pm - 3:30pm

OPTION 6: The Red Cross [Donate Blood] *OPEN* For those who might just be able to commit 45 minutes to Common Good Day, this event is for you! Hop in a car, give blood and enjoy a cookie. All blood types needed. Rides happen throughout the day. Blood is taken at the DHMC. Rides will be provided. Time commitment: 45 minutes anytime during the day.

OPTION 7: Hanover Hostel [Maintenance of facility assisting patients with transition from hospital)] *OPEN* We need three students to move boxes in the attic, cover windows with plastic and add some Xmas spirit with a few decorations. The hostel is next to the Howe Library in Hanover.

The GSC Food Drive Please bring non-perishable food to the box located in the Atrium. The GSC is sponsoring a pizza party to the department with most donations, so lets make it happen!

I will donate food during the Food Drive.

Common Good Beer Beverages and light food will be served at this Friday Beer event highlighting Common Good Day and the local service organizations.
